Updated 8/18 at 4:30 p.m. with new closing date.

The Barbeques Galore store in Rancho Santa Margarita plans to close on Aug. 26 Sept. 1.

The discount on the merchandise last week was 30 to 60 percent. The sales are final.

Revenue at the Rancho Santa Margarita store has been falling for the past two years, said Brett Maister, the franchised owner of the store.

For much of that time, the tough housing market impacted sales. More recently, the weak economy further deteriorated sales.

Maister said Aug. 18 that he still plans to open a new store in San Clemente, but the exact location hasn’t been determined yet. He hopes the new store will be open in 2009.

Why San Clemente?

There’s a lot more population growth due to housing construction in San Clemente than in Rancho Santa Margarita, where Barbeques Galore opened its store eight and a half years ago, general manager Maris Strautins said.

Maister also owns three other franchised Barbeques Galore locations in Orange County: Costa Mesa, Irvine and Laguna Niguel.

Wow, Rancho Santa Margarita just can’t catch a break. Are there any stores left in that McMansion Foreclosureville?
