90 seconds at Nordstrom Rack to snag $1,000 in goods

September 2nd, 2008, 12:00 am · 10 Comments · posted by Hang Nguyen, retail reporter

Nordstrom Rack will open its third O.C. store at the Laguna Hills Mall on Sept. 12 at 9 a.m.

The store will hold a “Race through the Rack” shopping spree. One lucky person will be the first customer to enter the store. He or she will have 90 seconds to run through the store and select up to $1,000 worth of merchandise.

Customers can only sign up for the shopping-spree drawing the morning the store opens. The drawing and race will be held on Sept. 12 at 8:45 a.m.

Folks don’t need to do or purchase anything to win the drawing. They do need to be at least 18 years old and present at the time of the drawing.

Also, the first 1,000 people to make a purchase will receive a Nordstrom Rack reusable tote bag. The store will also have coffee and pastries for customers while they wait for the store to open.

The new Rack spans 35,000 square feet, which is smaller than the 50,000-square-foot Costa Mesa store and 45,000-square-foot Brea Rack.

The Laguna Hills store is the typical size of a Nordstrom Rack in other parts of the country, spokeswoman Nichole Shell previously said.

The south county Rack will come nearly a decade after the last one opened in Orange County. The Brea Rack at Union Plaza opened in 1999. The first local Rack opened in Santa Ana at the corner of Bristol Street and Sunflower Avenue in 1983 before relocating to its current Costa Mesa spot at Metro Pointe at South Coast.

The latest Rack will occupy the building formerly called “Wow” and once filled by Tower Records and The Good Guys, which both filed for bankruptcy. The building has been vacant for more than a year.

For the fiscal second quarter ended Aug. 2, sales at stores open at least a year rose 6.3 percent for Nordstrom Rack stores. They fell 9 percent for regular Nordstrom stores.
