Circuit City faces bankruptcy?

Updated 10/2 at 7:15 a.m. with comment from Circuit City.

Two analysts said Circuit City may file for bankruptcy, according to two Wednesday stories by Reuters and Bloomberg.

It’s unknown what type of bankruptcy Circuit City , the nation’s second largest electronics retailer, may file. Linens ‘n Things, Mervyn’s and Barbeques Galore USA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

In Orange County, Circuit City has 12 stores.

Here’s an excerpt from the Reuters story:

“The risks of bankruptcy are very real, in our opinion,” Stifel Nicolaus analyst David Schick wrote.

Last week, Deutsche Bank’s Michael Baker said in a note to clients that without a strong holiday season, Circuit City “significantly increases bankruptcy risk.”

In an e-mailed statement, Circuit City spokesman Bill Cimino, said: “While others may speculate, we’ve commented directly on our liquidity position now and through the holidays.  We have adequate liquidity given our $1.3 billion asset-backed credit facility given current vendor terms.  I would also note that our lenders, in addition to our vendors, continue to support the company’s turnaround efforts.”

Earlier this week, Circuit City reported that sales at stores open at least a year fell 13.3 percent in the fiscal second quarter ended Aug. 31.

Sales dropped for several reasons, the company said, including a worsened macroeconomic environment, competitive pressures and a weakened brand position.

During a conference call this week with analysts, acting CEO James Marcum said Circuit City expects to dramatically reduce its store openings beginning next year. Other than fulfilling exisitng commitments, which are limited, it would not expect to open new stores in fiscal 2010 so it can focus on improving its exisitng stores.

An analyst later asked if there’s potential for significant store closures since the company is cutting back on store openings.

Chief financial officer Bruce Besanko said that “in the past, we periodically closed stores either because of performance or because of the brand or for other business reasons. We’re likely to do so again in the future … we’re undertaking a comprehensive review of the business in order to identify and execute against ways to dramatically improve the overall financial position of the company … as part of that review … all options will be on the table.”

It’s about time. I kept waiting for this to happen. I bought a GPS from Circuit City back in June and was asked by the salesperson if I wanted one of those extended warranty plans sold by the retailer. I kept telling him no but he kept insisting when finally I had to politely say to no I will not by a Circuit City back warranty because I don’t believe Circuit City will be in business in a few months. Next up for bankruptcy I am fairly certain will be Office Max.

Actually this brings up a important point the OC Register business section needs to write about. Why should I as a consumer buy any type of extended retailer’s warranty if there is a strong chance the retailer will not be in business in a year or two.

Judging by the customer service and store tidyness, or lack thereof, that I encountered on my last two visits to an OC Circuity City, I say good riddance.

Really, this is the silver lining to a recession and tight credit; all the weakest players go away and the strong players with solid products and strong business cases are left.

For years they had high pressure salepeople always on the upsell and not really there to answer customer questions. I stopped shopping at Circuit City years ago. They may have changed in the last few months but I think they have driven people away.

I refuse to shop there because of their horrible customer service, and lack of knowledgeable staff. Good riddance is right. I’ve been waiting for this to come. It was only a matter of time!

Just keep in mind - some of us have husbands who have been with this company thru it’s ups & downs - for many, many years - and we know the company has made mistakes - and so me have been looking & looking for another job, but they are not plentiful and haven’t been - so when you say “good riddance” - you are also saying “sorry Mr Family Man, sorry that you wont’ be supporting your family of 4 any longer, we really don’t care that you will no longer have an income or health insurance for you, your wife or your children, and oh well that there are no other jobs out there for you right now, so you might loose your house, etc - but as long as that company goes under I’m happy…” just keep that in mind…..
