Retailer files for bankruptcy, to close 3 O.C. locations

Updated 10/22 at 5:45 p.m. with closure info from 3 Day Blinds.

3 Day Blinds, a custom window-coverings retailer based in Anaheim, said it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Tuesday and plans to close 36 showrooms.

The company plans to shutter 36 showrooms, including three in O.C., by Oct. 27, said CEO Michael Bush. After those closures, only 10 showrooms nationwide will remain, including one in Orange County. For addresses of the four local stores, CLICK HERE. The showrooms average 1,500 to 2,000 square feet.

The company also operates 13 showrooms, averaging 1,000 square feet, inside The Great Indoors. The company plans to convert those into kiosks staffed by 3 Day Blinds employees, Bush said.

3 Day Blinds filed for bankruptcy protection to reorganize its business to focus more on selling products via 280 design consultants who visit the clients’ homes. Those design consultants currently generate more than 90 percent of the company’s revenue, Bush said.

More than 80 percent of its appointments are made online or through its call centers. “Most of our clients don’t need to visit our showrooms,” Bush said.

The high cost in having the showrooms was the key reason for the bankruptcy filing. Also, sales declined amid the challenging economy, Bush said.

In January, 3 Day Blinds announced the closure of 59 locations — four of them in Orange County: Costa Mesa, Mission Viejo, Orange and San Juan Capistrano. It then had 170 showrooms.

The retailer, which began in 1978 in a tiny furniture shop in Laguna Hills, said it expects to emerge from bankruptcy within a relatively short period of time. The company is majority owned by two San Francisco private equity firms: TPG Growth and Rosewood Capital, which bought 3 Day Blinds in 2006.

MORE STORES LIKE THIS ARE CIRCLING THE DRAIN.

  • Former Employee says:

I was laid off by 3day blinds and since they filed for bankruptcy, I was notified via email that I will not be receiving my last paycheck or severance. What a bunch of dirtbags.

I am still currently an employee of 3 Day Blinds (a Design Consultant) I would like to know if Former Employee received check or was it just late. Thanks

I was employed by 3 Day and laid off. Our final paycheck was late. There is so speculation that we will not be recieving our severance checks any time soon. From my understanding we will be receiving a letter explaining this. When I was first hired I was told how this company was family oriented. How can you not pay your former employees their severance so close to the holidays? Our families are the ones who are suffering from these store closures ,not the big corp. people sitting behind their desks in Anahiem.

I worked for 3 Day Blinds for over 7 years and was told that our store would be closing in a week. I was laid off and signed a promisory letter stating I would receive a severance package. My last pay check was 2 weeks late and then it bounced. I was told there was nothing I could do about it because they claimed bankruptcy. They laid off almost all of their employees, promising them severance KNOWING they wouldn’t have to pay it because of the bankruptcy. My last day of work was October 15 and I was promised my severance money within 7 days. It is now Dec 12…guess what, I STILL haven’t seen anything including a letter. What a waste of a company. If they treat their employees like this, imagine how they are treating their customers!
