Pottery Barn and The Body Shop stores at Fashion Island in Newport Beach closed last month, according to Bill Rams, spokesman for The Irvine Co., which owns the local shopping center.
Rams said the lease for the Newport Beach Pottery Barn store expired. The Body Shop spokesperson Sheikina Liverpool said the store closed because the lease expired.
Pottery Barn opened its store at Fashion Island more than 15 years ago and over the years was popular with Fashion Island customers, Rams said.
He said Fashion Island doesn’t have any replacement announcements to make. “But there continues to be significant interest in our centers despite the economy. Retailers continue to look at real estate, but they are taking longer to make decisions for obvious reasons,” he added.
Irvine Company also owns Irvine Spectrum Center and The Market Place.
Pottery Barn spokesperson Leigh Oshirak said the company does not have any plans to close any other stores in the area. It does plan to open a new store in Temecula in late March or early April, she said.
The Body Shop’s Liverpool also said the company is currently exploring other opportunities in the area.

Another closure at Fascist Island. Nothing new. Next!!
Pottery Barn? Now that is surprising.
We spent time at another retail venue (South Coast Plaza) earlier this week, and many of these home furnishings stores appear to have few customers…often it seemed the employees outnumbered shoppers. In fact, many of the stores appeared to have few, if any, customers. My spouse and I wondered how many of these storefronts would be shuttered this time next year, or at least replaced by another business. His guess, 10% would be gone. Mine…30%. We’ll see. Certainly not a scientific study by any means; however, casual observation seems to indicate some very challenging conditions. One thing we noticed…there was no shortage of security personnel…they appeared to be everywhere!
now it is more important than ever to support your local business.
every dollar that you spend with a local business, 0.80 stays in the community, spending on big chains (like the above), only keeps 0.20 in the area.
i really think that big-box retailers are dying dinosaurs, and look at what they have do to our environment.
please shop local and shop independent, it is the best thing you can do.
ohhhahhhhh say it isnt soooo… LOL dang
