Sears closes O.C. store

February 26th, 2009, 9:24 am · 19 Comments · posted by Hang Nguyen, retail reporter

Sears Holdings Corp. announced Thursday that it plans to close the underperforming Sears Essentials store at 2505 El Camino Real in Tustin tenatively on May 31.

The O.C. store spans roughly 105,000 square feet, said Sears spokeswoman Kimberly Freely.

“There are approximately 75 associates at that location,” she said. ”However, we are hopeful they will apply for open positions at other Sears and Kmart locations. Also, severance will be offered to those who qualify.”

This is the only local closure among the 24 additional closures the company announced Thursday in a press release. For the list of the 24 stores, CLICK HERE.

Sears Essentials is a mid-sized format that the company rolled out in 2005. The Tustin location was among the first 25 Sears Essentials stores, according to a company press release.

Here’s an excerpt from that press release:

Sears Essentials will offer Sears’ product categories that are integral to home and family life, such as appliances, lawn and garden, tools, electronics, apparel and home fashions along with routinely purchased convenience items, such as health and beauty, pantry, household and paper products, pet supplies and toys.  The name Sears Essentials, which resonated with customers in research conducted during the name selection process, conveys the important role that Sears plays in homes and families across the country, as well as the everyday solutions the store will provide.

What about the Sear’s at the Buena Park Mall….. Hasn’t that store been “underperforming” since the mid-80’s?

  • Nora says:

Not surprised, its kind of a weird store with hardly anyone working there and even less people shopping there.
Sad though to see even more people being put out of work.

  • broke says:

Put in a Walmart there!!!! I’m tired of going in to Santa Ana to shop the at Walmart.

I guess the fact that I’ve never even heard of the store might be an indicator of why it failed.

So true about Walmart. There are non around Irvine and I’m not about to drive to Foothill Ranch or Santa Ana. Anyways, I prefer Target over Walmart.
